Reaching a new Milestone for the promotion of climate change mitigation and the SDGs: UPM Sichuan Household Biogas PoA avoids 3 Million Tons of GHG Emissions

Beijing/Munich, 13 March 2017

We are pleased to announce that our award-winning GS CDM Sichuan Household Biogas PoA has avoided 3 million Tons of GHG emissions since its establishment. UPM PoA is the first CDM household biogas PoA to reach this impressive CO2 emission avoidance milestone worldwide and the second of all PoA registered under the CDM. The GHG avoidance is equivalent to almost 78 million tree seedlings grown for ten years.

UPM rolls out Independent Scientific Study on the Co-Benefits of its Sichuan Household Biogas PoA

Today, UPM publishes a comprehensive scientific study on the co-benefits of its “Sichuan Rural Poor- Household Biogas Programme of Activities” (CDM PoA 2898, Gold Standard 1239), which currently supports nearly 400,000 low-income rural households in China’s Sichuan province with advanced biogas digesters and smoke-free biogas cook stoves. For this study, UPM has appointed the Centre for Sustainable Environmental Sanitation (CSES) at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) to analyze and evaluate critically the PoA’s actual and potential co-benefits beyond the reduction of GHG emissions.

Third Issuance of Gold Standard CERs from our Sichuan Household Biogas PoA

Today, UPM announces that our flagship climate protection programme, the Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas PoA (CDM PoA 2898, GS 1239), received its third issuance of carbon credits. This time, around 613,000 Gold Standard Certified Emission Reductions (GS CERs), all vintage 2014, have been transferred to UPM. To date, the PoA has avoided a total of more than 2.25 million tons of CO2.

Our Sichuan Household Biogas PoA avoids 2 Million Tons of GHG Emissions

Only slightly more than three and a half years after the start of its reduction period on 10th of May 2012, our Sichuan Household Biogas PoA already has avoided the impressive amount of 2 million tons of GHG emissions. These GHG savings are sufficient to compensate for the annual carbon footprint of roughly 200,000 German citizens.

Our Sichuan Household Biogas PoA reaches mark of 1.5 Million Tons of Carbon Emissions Reduction

Beijng, Munich, 30.06.2015

Only a bit more than half a year after reaching the 1-million-milestone, our groundbreaking “Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas Development Programme” has now saved a total of 1.5 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions since the beginning of its reduction period on 10th of May 2012.

Beyond its outstanding climate protection impact, this Programme of Activities (PoA) substantially improves income, environmental conditions, health and quality of living of 400,000 participating low-income farmer families, i.e. nearly 1.8 million people, and thus contributes to sustainable regional development in remote mountain areas of China’s Sichuan province.

The next issuance of the PoA’s much sought after Gold Standard CERs (GS CERs) is scheduled for November 2015 with roundabout 600,000 GS CERs.

For further information on this globally unique PoA and the availability of its GS CERs, please visit the PoA website or contact us.

14 new CPAs included in our PoA

On 29th of January 2015,  our “Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas Development Programme” (PoA) has successfully included a new batch of 14 Component Project Activities (CPAs). As a consequence, more than 64,000 additional low income Sichuan rural households are using the advanced biogas digesters as well as the convenient and smoke free cook stoves purchased with support by the PoA.
Combined with the 73 CPA subprojects already included before, a total of 87 CPAs save GHG emissions and generate Gold Standard CERs within this PoA. These 87 CPAs enable almost 400,000 poor and underprivileged farmer families in remote areas of Sichuan to produce and use their own climate-friendly renewable energy and become independent from costly, dirty and unhealthy fossil fuels.

“By adding 14 new CPAs we consequently keep on scaling up our Sichuan Household Biogas PoA to one of the world’s largest and most successful programmes for climate change mitigation and sustainable development within the frameworks of the CDM and the Gold Standard“, comments Martin Dilger, Managing Director of German UPM GmbH.
